Research conducted by Foundation Grantee Grigori Enikolopov, Ph.D., is the cover story of the May 6 issue of Cell Stem Cell. Dr. Enikolopov’s study offers an explanation for why our brains produce fewer and fewer neurons with age.
This phenomenon is thought to underlie age-related cognitive decline and is due to the shrinking cache of adult stem cells in our brains. Dr. Enikolopov and his colleagues plan to use these findings to find drugs that can spur neuronal growth without harming the adult stem cell cache.
