Dr. Hong is a practicing psychiatrist in addition to a neuroscientist studying the causes of and treatments for brain illnesses. His motivation for conducting research is to integrate clinical needs into basic research, and to translate genetic, imaging, and neurophysiological findings into improved diagnostic and treatment methods for individuals with schizophrenia and other severe mental illnesses.

Dr. Hong completed his medical studies at Sun Yat-Sen University of Medical Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, in Guangzhou, China. He practiced psychiatry in China for several years before moving to the US where he completed graduate studies in medical/psychiatric anthropology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and then repeated a residency in psychiatry at the University of Maryland.
